Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
After the exhausting Pyrenean stage, this section offers a predominantly descending profile, a balm for the tired legs of pilgrims. The route winds through a dreamlike landscape, passing through some of Navarre's best-preserved hayfields and forests. The path is dotted with small and picturesque villages like Burguete and Espinal, following forest trails and rural paths of great beauty. Although it is mainly downhill, the route has its ups and downs, such as Mezquiriz and Erro hills, and the final stretch is a more pronounced descent that takes walkers to Zubiri by the Arga River, where the iconic medieval bridge known as "Bridge of Rage" stands out.
The stage that unites historic Roncesvalles with small local town of Zubiri is a transitional journey that allows the pilgrim to recover from the effort of crossing the Pyrenees. With 21.4 kilometers, the general profile is descending, taking the walker from the 950 meters altitude of Roncesvalles to the 530 meters of Zubiri. However, it's not a monotonous descent, as the route is dotted with gentle undulations and two small hills that break the rhythm of the downhill walk.
The main protagonist of this stage is the spectacular natural environment. The Camino enters dense forests of beeches and oaks, especially in the first half, creating an enchanting and shaded atmosphere that is appreciated on sunny days. They pass through charming Pirennean Navarre towns like Burguete and Espinal, with their careful farmhouses and tranquil ambiance.
The path combines comfortable forest trails with narrower trail sections, always surrounded by a lush and green landscape. As the journey progresses, the route approaches the course of the Arga River, which becomes a companion during several stages. The final stretch, after crossing the Alto de Erro, is a more technical and rocky descent that requires caution. Arrival in Zubiri, meaning "town of the bridge" in Basque, is marked by its iconic Gothic bridge over the Arga, known as the "Bridge of Anger" due to a legend attributing healing properties to its central pillar.
