Stage of the Camino

Stage Description

Leaving behind the monumental Salamanca, this is one of the longest and most demanding stages of the Via de la Plata. The journey is a long traverse across the Castilian plain, in completely flat terrain with no shadows. The road is an endless straight line that puts the pilgrim's mental strength to the test. The absence of towns and intermediate services forces exhaustive planning. The arrival at El Cubo del Vino, already in the province of Zamora, is a relief and a well-deserved rest after a hard day of flat terrain.
Leaving the golden city of Salamanca involves facing one of the most difficult stages of the Via de la Plata, not for its unevenness but for its great length and monotony. The journey is a long traverse across the Castile plain, in a landscape of cereal fields that lose themselves into the horizon. The road is almost completely flat and straight, which can be mentally exhausting. Additionally, the absence of shadows and intermediate towns during long stretches makes this stage a true challenge, especially in summer. It is essential to leave Salamanca with water and food for the entire day. Despite its difficulty, it's a stage of deep introspection, a face-to-face encounter with the vastness of the Meseta. The arrival at El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino, the first town in the province of Zamora, is a moment of great relief. This small locality, whose name alludes to its vinicultural tradition, offers the pilgrim a well-deserved rest and the necessary hospitality to recover from a marathon journey.
