Stage Description

This is a short and favorable stage with the historic and monumental Coimbra as its destination. The route is an enjoyable stroll that becomes increasingly urban as it approaches the city. Entering Coimbra, at the banks of the Mondego River, is spectacular. The city, cradle of one of Europe's oldest universities and declared a World Heritage Site, is a must-see cultural stop. The pilgrim has plenty of time to explore its Joanina Library, its Old Sé (Old Cathedral), and get lost in its steep streets of the old town.
The stage that leads to Coimbra is a short and exciting journey, designed to arrive in time at one of Portugal's most fascinating cities. The road, mostly downhill, leaves the rural surroundings behind as it gradually enters the urban area. Crossing the Mondego River, the imposing silhouette of the University dominates the hill. Coimbra was medieval Portugal's capital and is a center of culture and knowledge. Its University, World Heritage Site, is an unmissable visit, especially its spectacular Joanina Library, a jewel of Baroque. The pilgrim must dedicate the afternoon to exploring the city: the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha), the New Cathedral (Sé Nova), the Santa Cruz Monastery (where the first two kings of Portugal are buried), and the labyrinthine streets of the old town, filled with student life and the melancholic sound of fado. Coimbra is a top-class cultural stop that greatly enriches the Camino Portugués experience.
