Stage of the Camino
Stage Description
This stage links Novés with Escalona, a medieval town in the Alberche valley. The 18 km are moderately undulating, between olive groves, vineyards and pastures. Escalona preserves an impressive castle on top of a hill, the Renaissance palace of the Marquis of Villena and a medieval old town with walls and the historic Plaza Mayor.
The stage connecting Cáceres with Casar de Cáceres is a short and gentle journey, ideal for a peaceful exit from the big city. The path enters into Extremaduran heathland, in a landscape of oak trees and pastures. Arrival at Casar de Cáceres is a delight for the senses. This town is the birthplace of one of Spain's most famous cheeses: Torta del Casar. It's a creamy cheese made from raw Merina sheep milk that is eaten spread on bread. The pilgrim can visit a local cheesery, learn about the production process and, of course, taste this gastronomic wonder.
